The JBL Live Beam 3 bring the smart-case trickle-down done right: SoundGuys measured 8h14m of battery and MDAQS Timbre 5/5 in Studio mode, with 10-30dB of ANC. Bass runs hot by default and the case lacks the Tour Pro 3's transmitter, but the feature haul is unmatched here. Check the current price on Amazon.
— THE VERDICT · JUDGEANY EDITORSWhat the Live Beam 3 are
The Live Beam 3 are JBL's mid-range true wireless earbuds from the Live TWS 3 series, announced at CES in January 2024 and on sale from June 2024. Each bud carries a 10mm dynamic driver tuned for JBL's signature sound, six microphones feeding True Adaptive Noise Cancelling, Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC, AAC, LDAC and LC3, multipoint, IP55 dust and water resistance, and a 5-gram body. JBL rates the buds at 12 hours with ANC off and 10 with it on, with up to 48 hours total from the case, and claims a 10-minute charge returns 4 hours of listening. The headline is the case: a 1.45-inch touchscreen Smart Charging Case that controls playback, EQ, ANC and volume without reaching for your phone. Everything below comes from published reviews and owner reports. JudgeAny runs no lab and measured nothing ourselves.
Sound and codecs
Measured sound quality is strong, though the tuning runs bass-forward. SoundGuys tested the Live Beam 3 over six days on firmware 3.6.0 and found sound characterized by strong bass, emphasized highs and slightly underemphasized mids. Its MDAQS listener panel awarded the top Timbre score of 5 out of 5 in Studio EQ mode, with an overall score of 4.9, which predicts most listeners will rate the sound very well. TechRadar was even more enthusiastic, giving sound 5 out of 5 and noting LDAC tracks are beautifully relayed from a compatible Android phone. The default tuning takes the bass to what SoundGuys calls an enormous shelf, so purists will want the Studio preset, which dials the bass back and cleans up distortion. One limitation is platform-bound: iPhone owners get AAC only, so the hi-res story belongs to Android.
Noise cancelling
The ANC is genuinely good, with one dissenting report worth airing. SoundGuys measured 10 to 30dB of outside noise hushed away depending on frequency, with the strongest reduction under 300Hz, and judged you likely won't tell the difference between these and other top-tier earbuds. Transparency mode tested quite good. Owners on Reddit's r/Earbuds call it a clear step up from the Live Pro 2, according to a roundup by CordCuttersNews. The conflict: T3's reviewer heard a strange low-end droning sneak through the ANC, unpleasant enough to cause a jump scare, and hoped a firmware update would fix it. Nobody else, lab or owner, reports that artifact, and SoundGuys' objective measurement stands, so the verdict stays positive. Still, fit matters: the short ovoid nozzles make seal trial-and-error, and seal is what ANC lives or dies on.
The smart case
The 1.45-inch touchscreen case is what sets these earbuds apart at this price. SoundGuys lists screens for playback, ANC modes, spatial sound, EQ presets, Find My, notification previews, battery levels, a flashlight and a timer, plus a custom wallpaper uploaded through the JBL app. TechRadar calls the package a unique smart case with ample customization, and T3 found the screen brilliantly useful rather than a gimmick. There is one honest gap versus the flagship: SoundGuys notes the Beam 3 packs many of the Tour Pro 3's features with the glaring exception of the audio transmitter, so there is no wired-source retransmission, no Auracast broadcast and no head-tracked spatial audio here. Travelers who watch in-flight movies on the plane's own system should know that before buying.
Calls, battery and the app
Call quality tested well in the lab. SoundGuys ran mic samples across ideal, office, street, windy and reverberant conditions and found excellent noise rejection, concluding your voice will sound good enough over chat clients anywhere. Battery beat expectations in practice: SoundGuys' standardized battery gantlet, with real music peaking at 75dB, ran 8 hours 14 minutes, and the case supports Qi wireless charging on top of USB-C. The JBL Headphones app adds a 10-band EQ, Personi-Fi 3.0 hearing personalization, JBL Spatial Sound, Ambient Aware, TalkThru and an ear-canal fit test. Two caveats from the press: Expert Reviews found the spatial sound modes unconvincing and the audio personalisation ineffective, and SoundGuys warns firmware updates can take around fifteen minutes to download even though the install itself is quick.
Who should buy them
Buy the Live Beam 3 if you want the smart-case convenience without paying flagship money. The touchscreen genuinely replaces the phone for the controls you reach for most, the measured battery and sound are excellent for the class, and LDAC gives Android owners a real hi-res option. Commuters, office workers and anyone who fiddles with EQ presets will feel at home. Skip them if the case-as-transmitter is your reason for shopping, since that feature stays exclusive to the Tour Pro 3. Skip them too if you want neutral tuning out of the box: the default sound is heavy on bass, though the Studio EQ preset fixes most of it. Check the current price on Amazon before deciding.
